Mpox Case Count Reaches Two in the Philippines
What is Mpox?
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a rare but potentially serious viral infection. It is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is part of the same family of viruses that causes smallpox.
Mpox symptoms are similar to those of smallpox, but they are usually milder. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that can spread to the face, hands, and feet.
Mpox is spread through close contact with an infected person or animal. It can also be spread through contact with contaminated objects, such as bedding or clothing.
Mpox Outbreak
In May 2022, an outbreak of mpox began in several countries in Europe and North America. The outbreak has since spread to other countries around the world, including the Philippines.
On August 19, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
As of August 21, 2024, there have been two confirmed cases of mpox in the Philippines.
