62 Dead as Rescue Workers Battle to Find Survivors

80 Earthquakes Recorded in Past 7 Days, 195 in Past 30 Days

A series of powerful earthquakes that hit western Japan left at least 62 people dead as rescue workers fought to find survivors. The magnitude of the largest quake was 6.0 and it struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture at 11:36 p.m. local time on January 1, 2024. The quake triggered a tsunami warning, but it was later lifted.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that the quake was followed by 80 smaller quakes in the past 7 days and 195 in the past 30 days. The JMA also said that there have been 815 earthquakes in the past 365 days.

The death toll from the quake is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search through the rubble of collapsed buildings. The quake caused widespread damage, with homes, businesses, and infrastructure being destroyed.

The quake also triggered a tsunami warning, which was later lifted. The JMA said that the tsunami waves were only about 10 centimeters high when they reached the coast.
