LeBron James led his Cleveland Cavaliers back to the NBA Finals for the third straight year with a 135-102 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, but it was Celtics' Isaiah Thomas who was the star of the night.
Even though the Cavaliers were able to close out the series on their home floor, it was the Celtics who stole the show in front of a raucous crowd at TD Garden. The final score doesn't indicate how close the game was for much of the night, as the Celtics actually led by one point with just over five minutes to play in the fourth quarter. After Tristan Thompson hit a layup to put the Cavaliers up by one, Thomas answered back with a three-pointer to give the Celtics a 100-99 lead.
That would be the last time that the Celtics would hold a lead in the game. James took over in the final minutes, scoring the Cavaliers' final six points, and Kevin Love added four more to help seal the victory.
James finished with a game-high 35 points, and Love added 26. Thomas led the Celtics with 29 points, and Avery Bradley added 24. The Cavaliers shot 52.8% from the field, while the Celtics shot just 41.4%. The Cavaliers also outrebounded the Celtics 47-36.
The Cavaliers will now face off against the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. The Finals will begin on Thursday, June 1.
